I had to scroll up to confirm what I thought–and yes it was Sittingnutt….

Indi–great piece. I have a degree in linguistics and you are spot on. You also have been on fire lately. Mara prolific? Keep it up.

I love the idiosyncrasies of any version of English and dialect, including Sinhala. Beautiful. “Is it?”

anyway is this sri lankan “english” or everyday “sinhala”?

language spoken here is made up of many foreign imports and we are happy to accept and use them. same with culture. it is what we use or do that counts not what some fool says or writes. certainly there is no call to make the racist generalizations about sri lankans indi makes here.

so don’t get overly worked up over a non issue and don’t make silly an racist (as usual racist hypocrite indi.padashow accuse others of racism here too ) generalizations about sri lankans . but then like father like son i suppose.

Even before Salman Rushdie’s ‘Midnight’s Children’ legitimised Indian English in literary circles, it was perfectly cool to engage in it, without anyone passing snobbish judgement like the sunday times review does on the very existence of Sri lankan English . And if such a review did get published in the Indian press, it would be scoffed at – just as you’re doing with this post !

Michael Meylers book is nowhere near as bad as what that article states. At the very least its enjoyable to read. Us students of the Open University English Degree were even recommended the book by the academic staff.
