Opposition To Rallies

Photo from one of Mahinda’s rallies.

It’s great to have an opposition rally and all, but can’t we do something that doesn’t fuck up traffic? Like maybe get 5,000 people to stay home for the day, or go to Thoppigala or something. Eh? If you’re going to stand around and mess up traffic could you at least wash my car or something. Topless ladies? Something? The coming UNP rally at least isn’t funded by my tax rupees, but I still don’t relish traffic jams. I guess it’s a Sri Lankan thing. The culture her is all about conferences, rallies, ceremonies, openings and not doing much of anything. We certainly have a lot of professional associations and awards for a nation that doesn’t actually accomplish much. What I’m thinking is, if we’re going to have a rally we should do something productive, like blockade Parliament so the buggers can’t get anywhere. Or prevent Mahinda from shutting down Thurstan Road at 6 cause he wants to visit his old school. If any of these faux-VIPs want to travel there should be a flash mob blocking their way because they’re definitely less important than the working people of this country. Just saying.

Our country is now addicted to rallies and hunger strikes ,now even MP’s are waiting for some one to hunger strike to do something,Its so common that if there is no rallies they would not even feel like taking an action.

Not sure what you’re on about or what your point is Blair?

The Sencholai war orphanage incident in August 2006 happened during the day when Sri Lankan airforce bombers dropped 16 bombs on the orphanage, as per Norwigian SLMM monitors who visted the site.

Hmmm… are you sure it is not your tax rupees?

People who invest now will cover up their costs as soon as they come to power.

So it is your tax rupees finally, whether it is UPFA, SLFP, UNP, JVP or JHU.

But still you can be happy the cost adds to the GDP. Cheer up.

//The coming UNP rally at least isn’t funded by my tax rupees\\

Is UNP a profit earning organization? I think it’s not.
Then who funds these rally’s? Mainly the business community, who support the party. Then how these business people recover the cost?
1) By adding that burden on the consumers
2) Cheating on tax
3) Getting under arm benifits like unfair tax concessions from UNP governments (Once they get into power)

So, ultimately we “The Sri Lankans” pay the price of all these Tmasasha’s, no matter who’s organizing it. Unfortunately you are so obsessed with the carnival, and couldn’t see the reality, and making stupid statements like this.

//What I’m thinking is, if we’re going to have a rally we should do something productive, like blockade Parliament so the buggers can’t get anywhere\\

How can we do that? Nearly, half the “buggers” are suppose to take part in the rally.

//If any of these faux-VIPs want to travel there should be a flash mob blocking their way because they’re definitely less important than the working people of this country\\

I know, this is what “some people” are dreaming to happen in Colombo. Violance, mobs, attacks, burning. In simple terms, another 1983. So, then these “some people” can go around the world, shouting about these things to raise more funds to their NGO’s. Provoking Colombo for another 83. One of the key objectives in NGO agenda’s.

//Just saying.\\

I see. We all have our own disclaimers.

Agree that these rallies are a damned nuisance. The damage caused to pavements and street furniture by the attachment of flags and banners and the defacing of walls by posters has to stop, at the very least. The quantity of litter left around is also quite appalling.

Some standards of conduct need to be imposed for everyone who wants to organise a rally.

Not really sure what role rallies play in this country, since the people who attend are those bused in, sometimes rewarded in cash or kind.

I suppose it is to send a message to the government, but why not do it on a Saturday, Sunday or poya day instead. How do other countries regulate political rallies ?

What is the purpose of rallies, nothing, just to make havoc and make our lives a bit more miserable for a day.State me a single objective achieved from a political rally, none,i think as common people we should boycott all political rallies. If those buggers want to say something let them to use radio & T V or news papers. How many working hours and money we loose on these unnecessary selfish political gains, don’t forget the fucking green house gas emissions due to traffic jams. If some one calculate green house gas emissions due to political activities, sri lanka would be in top (ha ha).I think Sri Lankans should unite on this,no rallys, for gods sake this is 21th century, lets use TV,Radio,News papers for your filthy political propagandas.

Rallies are only worthwhile when the party you support is rallying. Otherwise they are a complete waste of time/money/space etc etc. Yet another pathetic but quintissentially Sri Lankan mindset.

The UNP Democratic Group is to launch an islandwide campaign to educate the people on the duplicity practised by the UNP.

“We will not allow the UNP to mislead the people at a time the Government is doing its utmost to address the national issue and we will help maintain the majority in Parliament,” Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge told the media at Seth Sevana yesterday .

He said Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe removed the Deputy Leader of the UNP Karu Jayasuriya from the party and is trying to create a Deputy Prime Minister post for Mangala Samaraweera under a different ‘company’.

He only wants to grab power like a dictator ignoring all party members. He will even sell the elephant to get power and we are getting ready to buy the elephant he said. The party members are convinced that what the D group did was correct by joining the Government, Lokuge said.

Minister of Agriculture Hema Kumara Nanayakkara said that the party got a massive amount of money to spend for the election and there was a huge balance left and Ranil Wicremeasinghe ill-treated every member who questioned about it.”

There had been times that we had to pocket out to pay telephone, water and electricity bills at Sirikotha while the party money was misused. Everyone will be able to see how Ranil loses his power in the coming weeks, he said.

The UNP D Group is to carry out an awareness campaign in Gampaha, Kandy, Matara, Kurunegala and other main cities during the next few weeks.

Hehe who is this UNP (D) supporter?? The first rally organized by the UNP rebels were attended by only 80 people including 10 aged women brought in by that bugger Karu… When Karu came on stage these women started to shout ‘kaageda me balawayge?… Karu ge balawayge”…… The balawayge of 80 people is their strength!!!…. The joke is, some of these women were carrying umbrellas with “Ranil” depicted in them…..

Why All The Guns?

I don't think it's normal to surround the opposition candidate with troops as a result is being called? Nor is it normal to surround the media outlets with guns. And the Daily Mirror website just went down, hopefully just for a second. I don't think the Fonseka camped is very armed, certainly not compared to the Army. I also don't think they're staging a coup from the Cinnamon Lakeside. This is all just very odd,

The Break

Sarath Fonseka's run has broken the traitor/patriot narrative that's been dividing the country. Using the LTTE as a wedge Mahinda tried to divide the country along those lines (into those who love Sri Lanka and those who do not). The spear itself, however, broke and now the division is meaningless. It is now possible to be opposition without being a traitor.

Ranil Should Go

If anyone should step down, it's Ranil Wickremesinghe. This is the umpteenth loss he's been in and he tossed the dude overboard as soon as it was over. Ranil said it was a free and fair election when A) it wasn't, it was merely tolerable by execrable standards and B) Sarath was saying he didn't agree with the results. From the body language at the conference table, Sarath was always leaning JVP, but perhaps that's

The Coup: Smelt It, Dealt It

I thought Mahinda naming state companies after himself (Mihin) was a whim, but it may be his will. More and more Sri Lanka is the state, and the state is him. Or them I guess. The opposition candidate is in jail and his son is running for office. Elections are becoming a formality for fealty, opposition a coup. Such are the spoils of war. Something smells a bit off.

Opposition Is Loyalty

If you lie long enough does it become the truth? Or do people just fall asleep? The new charge (like the old charge) is that opposition is treason. Well, it's not. Loyal opposition is a vital service to the country. The lie is conflating opposition to Mahinda with opposition to Sri Lanka. The two are not the same. The slanders being thrown against the opposition are based on a lie, but there is so much
