Island Wide Power Loss

I thought it was just Battaramulla, but apparently Sri Lanka has gone dark (wtf?). Apparently the Power Minister said this was due to lightning and that the CEB is looking into it. Perhaps tomorrow after tea. I’m used to power outages every week or so, but for the whole island to go under is a bit odd. Damn lightning. An LTTE sympathizer, obviously. I also wonder where exactly lighting would have to hit to knock out the entire island. However, it seems that Jaffna is on another grid and they still have light. I also remember when that ship dropped anchor in the Indian ocean on top of the undersea cable and the country lost Internet for a day. SLT at least, but a lot of backbone. That was great. The country must be eerily dark right now, with all sorts of dark doings.

Apparently lighting has hit Laxapana near the Kelaniya river, knocking out the main grid. That means that power won’t come back till the AM most prolly. Someone’s going to have a long night.

Many areas of Colombo have regained power. Wonder if it’s the same for other districts as well……

The English Speaking Elite:
  • shammi: Oh? But there was never any need for you to guess was there? Besides, I've already mentioned my kids on this blog a couple of times. Sorry you weren't tuned in....
  • Mahinda: :) Oh you're already a mommy, eh? Would never have guessed!...
  • shammi: And then there was this awful, evil wizard ...... Don't mind him Dodo, He's just jealous 'cos he could never think up such a sweet gesture. You may send me any number of cute trollcats. And Mahinda, I'm already telling my kids a different story....
The Final Cross:
  • shammi: They must have abandoned the original plan for fear of not being able to muster enough support. Most people wouldn't fancy a beating up by the riot police and a night out in the cooler. So it was just a protest by a few opposition UNP MPs dressed in black, sitting outside the parliament somewhere. The few who are left, that is. Tragic!...
  • The way of the Dodo: No I live in Sri Lanka. I just haven't heard of the black day rally outside of the black july one...
  • shammi: Oh! you're probably not based here. The forces opposing the amendment had planned to call a general strike and urged people to dress in black on 8th Sep. as a sign of protest. Not sure whether it's still on, 'cos there's talk of a fast unto death by someone near the parliament today, : ) Yeah, another one of those!...
Much More Mahinda:
  • The way of the Dodo: really!...
  • Colombian: Anyone else is going to the 'Black day' rally?? I was promised a pack of chicken fried rice and a bottle of old arrack....
  • Mahinda: Is that what's happening, rookie? Ok then. Hey listen, if you want to improve on that big L on your forehead, I know this really good tattoo guy that does good work. I'm not sure he's ever done a forehead before, but I'll ask him for you. Now enough of the banter. While I'm enjoying it, I can't imagine too many of the other people visiting this blog will appreciate our little exchanges so much. So...

The Psychology Of Power

Jonah Lehrer wrote about an interesting study on power, and hypocrisy. Basically, people were split into high and low power groups. The high power group tended to cheat more (at dice) and simultaneously moralize more. In other studies people tended to behave the most like 'assholes' (and I quote) when they were in a position of power and isolated from other people, and thus empathy. Basically, power makes people more selfish, probably because they can

Examples Of Corruption And Waste

These are some allegations of corruption I received in an email forward (Download PDF). They allege that over Rs 430 billion has been robbed/wasted ($4.3 billion USD). I can't vouch for all of this, but there is a lot of wasted and lost money. The airlines, for example, have always been or been made into money losing enterprises. The hedging deal on oil was a huge loss, and we are paying more for less in

NY Times On Our War

The Times has an article on our charming little war. Sri Lankan Army Is Pushing for End to 25-Year War Against the Tamil Rebels. Headline makes me chagrin. I'm 26 years old. This fucking sucks. I do hope the war will end and the Tigers get defeated, even by these johnnies. However, there are caveats placed like mines throughout the article. For example, they note that we actually have no idea what's really going on

Chinese Attack On Google

Sometimes I feel like I am living in science fiction, except with no flying cars. Apparently Chinese hackers attacked Google, targeting the personal information of human rights activists. In response Google has said it will stop censoring search results and may pull out of the country entirely, sacrificing like half a billion in yearly revenue. Intense.
