Bomb Found in Borella

Sure cart looked nada like this. Not even sure it was a cart. Photo by Dilettante

I hear they found a bomb in Borella, near the YMBA. Totally sketchy on details. Birdie tells me it was in a push-cart covered in vegetables. Reportedly 15kgs. Oi. This shit is getting kinda old. Again, I dunno what strategic targets around there, at least in freaking push-cart range. The Young Mens Buddhist Association, um, and nothing. There’s a ‘Lover’ fashion outlet down the way which is a bit of an eyesore. It’s honestly a very residential, medium commercial area and I can’t see any real target to bomb there, it doesn’t even get much Parliament traffic. Maybe they were handing it off to someone else to get around checkpoints or something. I suppose all the explosives must be moved around before they can finally target and kill somebodies. Urgh.

note, now i hear it was a push-bike. Dunno

Hah, reminds me of the thembili cart bomb near the Independence Square yonks ago. Well you can’t say there aren’t strategic targets. Who knew there would be a strategic target near Liberty Plaza juc. [apart from Krrish] Can’t-see-any-real-target-to-bomb is the thing we get wrong. We don’t see there’s a potential target until Prabha’s butchers find it out.

My goodness 15kgs?? Was it a bomb, or..??

LTTE can achieve multiple goals by triggering a bomb here in Colombo. Killing their VIP target may be their goal number one but the terror such bomb can create lot of problems especially when a major regional event is taking place in Colombo. This objective they can achieve to a great extent even if they failed to reach their target

Like you’ve said, this possibly might be a bomb ‘being moved’ to a target.. OR maybe there was no VIP or a “strategic target” but was just a bomb to get civilians? That road where the YMBA is is chock-a-block traffic at any given time of the day – pedestrians and vehicles. Not to mention a HUGE crowd waiting for buses (again at any given time of the day!) 5 metres down the road from the building!

On an aside – ever thought of changing your blog from ‘Indi’ to ‘Actual Breaking News’?? No other sites (ESP those claiming to be immediately updated 24/7) gets news to ppl as fast as u do!! Seriously – as soon as I ‘hear’ of something happening in SL – I rush onto check this blog! TNX! ;o))

A possibility is that the LTTE is just showing that if they WANTED to blow something up, they have the capability to. As if that needed underlining.

Unequal Marriage In Sri Lanka (The Foreign Kind)

I recently wrote about gay marriage, which is not even on the radar in Sri Lanka. But we have another type of marriage discrimination here as well. Foreign marriage. If you marry someone non Sri Lankan, they can never become a citizen. Their lives and their rights to even be in the same country as their children are permanently unstable, and it’s patently unfair.

How Things Change (Gay Marriage)

When Obama announced his (legally unbinding) support for gay marriage, he cited gay people he knows – members of his staff, friends, families, neighbors, soldiers. When Joe Biden pre-announced his personal opinion, he cited Will And Grace. I’d say Modern Family. Both TV shows, humanizing gay families and bringing them into American homes. Which is how it happens. Exposure, basically. I think that’s how reconciliation and social justice ultimately happen.

Sarath Fonseka And Minority Politics

I started off not really liking General Sarath Fonseka, him being part of the aggressive war effort. I didn’t support the war (largely cause I thought it would fail), and I thought Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Fonseka were gleefully stomping everything. Fonseka even came out and said “I strongly believe that this country belongs to the Sinhalese but there are minority communities and we treat them like our people,” in 2008 (National Post). Then when he ran for President in 2010, he won mainly in minority areas. Which shows you how things can change.

General Sarath Fonseka Out Soon?

General Sarath Fonseka was arrested on a bunch of trumped up charges, but mainly for daring to threaten Mahinda in a Presidential election. Despite his poor health, Fonseka was arrested in February 2010 and sentence to three years. Word on the street now, however, is that he’ll be released soon. Like any day now. President Mahinda Rajapaksa has told the Hindu so, so it looks like the General will be out soon. Without his title, a proper house or much shot at power, but out still.
