Maskerade Party at H20
Offshore is throwing a masked ball at H20 this Friday and Saturday. These are the same guys that did the excellent Buba Beach Party a couple months ago. That was the best party I’ve been to here (besides the Glen Terry concerts). Ryan Holsinger ran a proper detailed review for the Leisure Times. Maskerade promises to be more over the top. I think Offshore basically built a castle in H20, complete with acrobats and stuff. I’m not normally much for big parties, but I like the music and atmosphere at Offshore parties and DJs Ben and Tim have a rare unique taste. The main bonus for me is that I can go one night without hearing ‘Summer of 69′.
From what little I know of this party, it’s themed as a masked ball, with the tagline ‘live another life’. At this time it seems sorta appropriate. I think people are dressing up, I know one guy going as Zorro. From what I remember of university Halloween, girls tend to use costumes as a chance to dress more slutty than usual. Slutty nurse, slutty lawyer, slutty witch, that’s what people seriously call themselves when you ask. But I digress. I don’t think you have to wear a costume, though it’d prolly be fun.
Again, main bonus for me is the music. And that everyone will be there. From what I remember of the last beach party it was solid (and new to me) rave music, and for the next month everyone was playing the same. That atmosphere was a lot of free and distinct spaces where you could participate in the party while still being immediately surrounded (or not) by friends. That was well organized but, again, I’d recommend reading the LT Article for details.
Anyways, this party is both Friday and Saturday. I think they’re selling tickets at H20.
I want to visit my friend in China before he comes back. Free place to crash and all. So, I applied for a visa to China, from Colombo. I’m not sure I’ll get it, but this is process to at least apply. For official but incomplete info, check out the
The Mahavamsa (a history of Sri Lanka) is full of conflicts between generals and kings. Usually, the more bloodthirsty and unscrupulous would win. Our current (elected) ruler Mahinda Rajapaksa has had his own general conflicts, namely with one Sarath Fonseka. In the old days Fonseka would have staged a coup, as in literally try to cut of Mahinda’s head, and Mahinda would – if that failed – tie him to four elephants and split his parts asunder. Can’t do that shit anymore. Instead Fonseka ran for office and lost and Mahinda tossed him in jail.

do you know if that’s the same Ben who works (or used to work) at TNL?
one of my friends (who was american) used Haloween (in sri lanka) to dress up as a slutty pirate. She was sooo pissed off when noone else had dressed up and she was left lookin stupid and slutty. hopefully the fancy dress part of this would be more successful than haloween was.
Yes…its the very same Ben who used to work for TNL…:) also known as DustBIN!
Didnt notice the LT site before, good read. how come they are not Syndicated ?
anyway, interesting.
Damn shame about your friend Shimmi. If she was feeling embarrassed she should just have taken her costume off.
Does anyone else find having one post about how the country is going to shit and the next post about having a big party in Colombo quite telling?
Telling what? People can’t go into mourning, you have to keep living.
I am wit u on that indi….
we all live in our own world…
As long as our world operates smoothly we should be happy..
when time does permit take a peep at the real world :-)
Cos u cant appreciate good things without the bad,…
“The main bonus for me is that I can go one night without hearing ‘Summer of 69′.”
I hear you, man.
*Consoles*
No Indi you’re right. People have to keep on living. I won’t be at the parties because I have the flu and it’s the world cup quarters. What sort of idiot organises a party on the WC quarter finals night?!
In the same way though, I’m sure you can appreciate that some people will, misguidedly I grant you, find such activities vulgar and in bad taste. In fact, outside of Colombo I’m sure that would be a vast majority of people. This country is judgemental in its extreme and its lack of thought is unfathomable. Anything ‘Western’ is evil.
FTV, properly manufactured alcohol – and women. Fucking regressive cunts.
Think about the people whose livelihood is affected by the lack of motivation to go out. My hairdresser says business has plummeted after the first bomb. Bars and nightclubs, already affected by the drinking laws, are being doubly hit by this. Restaurants maybe losing business as well. Hikkaduwa is a ghost town. Waiters, barmen, late night tuk tuk drivers, are all affected, not to mention the owners of the businesses.
Yeah, all the moralistic stuff the government does just hurts normal people both in terms of sales and tax revenues. Take alcohol for example. Banning alcohol advertising cuts the money going into newspapers, and specifically the commissions that the normal reps on bikes get for selling those pages. Charging resto/bars for staying open past 11 reduces working hours and tips, and sales. Cutting off nightlife at that hour also hits the trishaw drivers who can charge much higher rates at that hour.
Sri Lanka gets a huge chunk of income from tourism and entertainment in general and asking people to stop because the situ is shitty just hurts everybody. It’s not pro-poor at all.
I find it telling that some people probably dropped more money in one night than the majority of the country makes in a month.
And these people are supposedly the well-educated ones.
Country’s going to the dogs with fools at the helm. Let’s party!
Sad.
Darth I agree with you mate. It’s obscene the amount some of these buggers spend on ONE night out. Unfortunately some of us aren’t that appallingly loaded and only ask for the menu at Clancy’s when we’re sure we’re at least second.
The fact remains that these rich kids aren’t going to go warm and charitable all over because they’re not allowed to go out. They’re probably going to have house parties and get pregnant (says Sophist being completely non-judgemental and astereotypical).
So is it better that they bust their cash within the lawful bounds of the economy so that there is some trickle down effect, or is it better to tell them to take their oodles of money elsewhere.
As Indi says it’s not pro – poor at all. If a police state is going to be enforced de facto, there better be some commensurate rise in living standards of the poor for what the ‘rich’ are supposed to be sacrificing.
You say it’s ‘telling’ – of what?
A couple years back when we were in college, my sisters and I went to a costume party dressed as witches and we were the only ones there looking slutty. So yeah, I know it sucks, but at least everybody was able to tell us apart.
what is with folks like darth? why does everyone suppose we’re all meant to feel guilty about getting out a little? the moment one of us blogs about a party (or something even remotely fun), we get shot down by all these bleeding-heart-’how could you possibly be out partying when the country is in political chaos’ types. god forbid life goes on and we must try to do nice things for ourselves.
dude, you sure know colombo inside out…read about you in serendib magazine…keep it up…
[...] The most recent Offshore Party (Maskerade) was at H20 (Photo Gallery) and – while fun – it was somewhat constrained by the club atmosphere. Entry is still oppressive and status challenging and by the end of the night, as the costumes fall off and decorations come down, it feels like a club again. Not to criticize overmuch, it was a velly good night. [...]
