IT Times

IT Times 5.11 (2005, November) is almost out. Spent all day at (an) office today, and going in tomorrow. I think I actually have an office-office (with a peon) but I’ve been there twice. Been sitting in the conference room, shooting the shit with Aruna. In the next room I can hear people reciting Sinhala news like so many monks. Walk through the press, trying to answer text messages without getting a trolley full of Lankadeepa in the shins. I ferry the whole magazine around on a portable hard disk cause I can’t be bothered to figure out the network. Will upload a PDF once I have a decent sleep and a shower. For now here’s the cover, which is hopefully less indecipherable than last time. Omigod it’s a girl.

Um, and that is all I have for now. I’m sleeeepy. Here’s one of the guys that runs the press, checking the colors on a mostly Cyan print. Oh, and the model is Wyomi from Impakt. I took the photo this time, at a friends house on Longdon Place, with an actual pool in the house. Not that there’s more than 15mm of pool.

Update: You can download the web preview of IT Times 5.11 here.

Nice composition, quite a striking cover.

Get one with bigger boobs next time (not that these are all that bad).

ahahaha. Boobs are hard to find, but yeah, not that these are bad. D showed me this Liquify/Bloat tool to make them bigger in Photoshop, but not quite fair to the model. I did ask.

Also asked my mom if unpermissioned boob enlargement was moral behavior and she yelled at me.

hey… me thought it was easier to find good boobs here than proper bottoms…

so that is the famous ‘minority report’ screen thing? hmmm..

better looking girl than the last. and yes more boobs. the last cover u could just see the red bra cup. she sorta looked like a wannabe slag- which is worse than a slag. i picked up the mag at the bookstore the other day- a bit thin for RS150 isnt it? how are the sales going?

indi
2005-11-06 03:59:45

mmm, try to be nice when talking about other people. Besides Mahinda.

November issue is bigger, as December will be. Bear in mind that previous issues were like 80% copy-and-paste whereas this version is all original content. I think it’s worth 150, or $1.50

Think sales are good, they ordered more for next time. Should get a report soon.

is the photo of the bare chested printing press dude an attempt at exposure equality for the sexes? if so, can you please find some better looking ones?

ahahahaaa, i think he’s all right, he just happened to be there. I’ll tell Wijeya to be more selective about the shirtless men manning the press. I’ve had my eye out, found one geek with a nice face, but none with bodies yet. For your edification of course.

When do you exactly turn from a tit-man to an ass-man? Or do you go through an entire life time of being one or the other? If Freudian theory holds true, we’re born tit-men and then gradually change colour but here’s me still waiting…….

You should have used Wyomi for last months cover photo. Coming to imagine it, sure it would have had a different kick ha?

bigger boobs??? if u want bigger boobs u should go and pick urself up a playboy magazine, oh im sorry it seems from reading the comments that yall might be too young to buy a playboy, so ur gonna be perverts and knock da gurl on the cover of a damn nerd magazine!! . and better looking?? come on she is a hell of alot prettier than alot of the gurls in those modeling agencies.

Well, guess boys WILL be boys (thats a good thing, maybe again, depends on your point of view) and I think the cover is looking quite nice. The headlines still needs some attention, but hey, the model, the whole “Minority Report” thing is quite cool… at least, thats what I think (after all, I am still entitled to my OPINION)

Thanks for the comment Lance. I like your design work and your opinion actually gets through my mental spam filter.

Whoa… Talk about a lot of dissing going on about my boobs. Wow… After Indi’s comments on my boobs at the shoot, can’t say im really surprised to read all this about my top loader! But apart from the fact that it’s me on the cover, i think the design is hot. Most IT mag covers here just do some freaky design combining computer chips, a ton of “@” signs, a few “WWW”and the always famous green Matrix numbers effect! I’m no IT girl, but to me this is a welcome change! Nice job Indi.

Open source = flashed bra, Virtual office = petti, Virtual reality = ????

Is this guy fooling poor Sri Lankan teenagers to steal $ 1.5 from their pockets or having fun with shooting these covers?

I love it! Depth of field and bright beauty in the front…Crisp and eye-catching. I am damn impressed Indrajit.

2005-11-08 11:56:17

Fantastic cover. I think it has the envisaged amount of sophistication without being boring. Much better than the first (not necessarily referring to the girls here though. I think they are both good looking).

Yes Wyomi… What’s got you confused?

2005-11-08 16:36:29

Anyway IT Times is the only nerd serving magazine in the market today..I think what matters is content not the cover.. Cover is merely an attraction (btw I doubt ??) Anyway Indi make IT Times title more clear so that gals will not mistake it 4 STYLE mag.

cover maybe an attraction, but dont really think it that appealing for an IT mag cover ( no offence to the model)

Guys I’ve been going through all your comments & there’s something that Laktec commented that “Indi should make the IT title clearer”. Dude no offence but i think what he’s trying to do is to target the magazine for not only geeks, he’s trying to target it to the young crowd as well. I must admit this cover is off the hook.

2005-11-14 14:06:05

It is you… hmm! What got me confused? You on a magazine cover, that’s what!

Well its really nice work from you guys, but while I was reading one article IT Times 5.11 I found out the material is very familiar to me. Once I cross checked some paragraphs were directly extracted from a website. I think you guys should be more careful about the material you publish on your magazine because if not properly cited it can be act of plagiarism

indi
2005-11-14 19:56:37

Which article? They’re all original, except the ‘feed’ part of ‘newsfeed’. Those are news bites and they’re identified as ‘compiled’ in the contents page.

Article about GPRS….Some paragraphs are directly from GSM World

You’re right D, 2 paras are lifted. Thanks for pointing it out, I’ll talk to the writer.

Hi Indi

Im impressed with your site, and the work with it times looks good.

I submitted an article once for IT Times (I gather the IT times magazine you refer above is the same publication?) in Sep, and those good folks took the article, removed my name, and published without paying me.

I wasn’t really interested in the money but I was deeply offended by their theft of my work.
In retrospect I don’t blame them, I blame myself for actually expecting any better.

Like all good things sri lankan, IT times had a lot of potential, but ended up being a letdown – the last mag i saw (sep) which had my stolen article was sadly full of spelling errors, and most of the articles seemed lifted from other sources.

Last but not least… for anyone who is curious, my article is the one on satellite TV in the sept magazine, somewhat enigmatically titled (how satellite tv work). (questionable grammar in said article and lifts from other articles not inserted by me)

To Wyomi, you are enigmatically beautiful; you are truly an exquisite vision of perfection. I would probably give my left arm, or sell my soul to a state certified real estate agent, just for the honor of asking you out but a.) you probably have your own fan following and b). dating a one armed man has a certain social stigma attached to it.

Lastly… the bigger is better thing as relates to boobs mindset… I don’t get it…. but as best as I know its a sexual selection/evolutionary thing..

I wasn’t involved in the September IT Times, but I’m deeply sorry that they jacked your work. If you can give me some (email) paper trail I can get you paid for those pages. I hope everyone understands that this current incarnation is very different from the latter. I hope you can tell that the qual is better on the October and November ones.

As per the copying, it’s standard practice for Sri Lankan tech mags, but not for use. Rakesh’s article was original, detailing how to set up Dialog phones to use GPRS. He did, however, lift 2 paras on what GPRS was and Mahangu spoke to him. We said we were embarassed by it and he said he was sorry, and I don’t think it will happen again. If it does happen again, which we can’t always control, we’ll always try to be open about resolving the problem.

So, again, email me confirmation that it was your article and I can shove it through payroll, and publish an apology on behalf of the prior team.

(Comments wont nest below this level)
2005-11-20 00:51:53

Hi indi.. Isn’t it way past your bed time? Just kidding.

Thank you for the kind words…. Im not sure how dig up the paper trail.. i submitted that article from this email address actually. Ill see if I can find the original article. Was sent direct to ashwins personal mail…. im sure if you asked him hed vouch for me. Or maybe not!

I don’t wan’t to be paid – I told this at the end to Ashwin. But I would be deeply grateful if someone could give a donation to help age sri lanka (as those people have flooded me with mail requesting helpout and I’m too cheap or lazy to respond). Alternatively a subscription to IT lanka wouldnt kill.

Just saw the new PDF. My oh my I am impressed. Its clear you guys are on the right track!

Do you have a web site? (for IT times)

As far as the magazine content.. I still think its a bit too textual.. I have an attention span measured in milliseconds (Too much TV? poor genes? Who knows)… If I could give a suggestion I’d say reduce the quantity of text… go for quality… Use more tables… more graphs… more box things ….

By the way… are you guys looking for hired help? I can spell some and I’m handy with a broom. And lately I have too much time….

And lastly… since everyone is i the blog business… here is my new blog

Ming Ming Ming….the telephone goes Ming. Hullo Hullo…Loku’s getting busy – who were those buggers from the early ’90s??

I think Freud’s stages were limited to our formative years. The digital, anal, oral etc. However, I think whether you’re a tits or arse man is purely a subjective aesthetic appraisal for which only you are responsible. If you are a boobs man you will be forever machan. Don’t fight it.

And yes…’nice’ boobs are easier to find in SL than well shaped arses. The SL bootie tends to evaporate into a mass of nothingness or a concave monstrosity of minuteness. It’s very sad to see girls with really pretty faces and appalling visuals waist down.

2005-11-21 23:04:16

Well hi again! (indi, plz DONT publish this message in your magazine!!!)
i got a shock of my life when i saw my post apearing in IT Times… anyways…

A small complaint…i dont think it is your fault or anything… its just i had to “rasthiyadu-fine” a lot to “find” the November issue of IT times. I live around Maradana, and the usual bookshop i used to buy the magazine hadnt got the new edition…so i had to stay a bit. in the mean time i fugured out that staying would not do any just to me..so i went to Vijitha Yapa next to MC. here there was NO MAGAZINE. totally dissapointed i went to MD Gunesena which was in the opposite…-same answer “NO, sorry sir out of stock” said one, then another said, “sir, we didnt get the new edition”…
i do not know which version to accept. so finally i found out that my cousin had got his hands on a mag…so i went over to his house and had to “steal” it from him. (poor guy) (dont mind- he is not that intelliget to look up this site!! hehe). Indi, if its under your power or control try to see why such things happen..i mean why stocks dont come in time or otherwise.

Now that i have your magazine…here are some comments:

another excellent edition! I think your magazine is reaching to an “international standard”…(yeah i know i am exagerating a bit..)but it just keeps on getting better. The photo pages (flickr) is a really good idea too…a good aproach to promote Sri Lankan photographers…(I suggest to have another page for sri lankan graphic designers too…) nice cover page..and nice model. i loved Mahangu’s artical on vertual office..and also the gaming column – Riddick. and on Raveen Wijay..’s artical he had forgotten to mention what RIAA or P2P meant. Not every one out there are geeks who know accronyms.. ppl buy your magazine to improve their knowledge on IT…so you should make sure that these are explained.. well i know that it means something like Reacording Industry Assocn of America or some thing and p2p is peer to peer…

the artical on winamp skins was very good…but the sad part is that non of my friend understood it untill i explained it to them… i think that artical was a bit too technical…not in amature level…

the articals on blogs, php, xhtml were good as well…just keep up the good work!

adios!

-Hashir

Thanks Hashir. You’re right the distribution is a little buggered, I have to start paying some attention to it. I focused on content first issue and now I’m trying to stabilizing the advertising revenue so we can stay afloat. After that I can pay attention to promotions and circulation.

btw, I saw your ‘Bring It On’ shots on Flickr, which were pretty good.
