Dubai Bye

montreal street

Ron took this photo in an alley in Outremont

In the Air France lounge now, to spend 2 days in no-man’s land (Update: stuck in Dubai for a few days, saw a kid getting beat up, etc). The flight boards soon and I should make a few phone calls. Last night went to Kilo with Ron and Miya. Had leek soup and scotch and talked about feeling restless at this age. Everyone, at least me, is chasing some spectre of success. I really don’t know that I see it in the West anymore. Montreal is still a marvelous place to live, but there is precious little insanity and change here. Nobody gets thrown in jail and nobody dies and I don’t think anyone my age can make as much of a difference. Anyways, my plane is boarding. I miss my friends terribly, but it’s good to be going home.

OK, now in Dubai, which kinda sucks, though I am so happy to get out of the Airport. At some cheap hotel with an inexplicable kitchen. I was an ass and didn’t reconfirm my flight, which means I’m stuck here till the 22nd (at latest, and most likely). Was unable to find anything on reconfirmation on the Qatar Airways site and gave up, which was stupid. Actually feel fine though, it’s marvelous to have a door and a bed.

I was dozing in the airport and I saw some guy (full Arab white dress, wife in Burqa) fully closed-fist his 9 year old to the ground. When the kid was down the dad kicked him in the stomach, and when the kid stood up his dad bitch-slapped him really hard. Like, really really loud. I was sitting there trying to read Anna Karenina (longest book I could find). The kid was wailing like mad, and then his younger brother got a slap when he started crying too. Then they put a napkin in his mouth, I know not why. The mom looked completely nonplussed and this ridiculous family parked themselves at the top of the escalator, blocking everyone. Fucking weird.

Third worlders get treated like shit here, as far as I can tell. A lot of the cleaning staff is Sri Lankan, and the flights are packed with day laborers. I have to spend 2 days here cause they’re so full. White people seem to usually get served first and there are some Banglas and Indian who seem to be living there. I guess it makes a difference being able to negotiate in English, but Dubai Airport is really fucking useless. They have a lot of support staff for Emirates, but if you’re on any other airline there’s like one guy to handle 400 problems. Mr. Mendes. That is a crap job and I hope he’s getting paid well, but I also think that Dubai could do better than one guy, a 1998 Compaq and a filing cabinet.

Some Banglas and Africans seem to be pretty much living in the terminal now. One Indian carries around his ticket stub like a dead baby until Mr. Mendes yells at him to get out. I guess they have to stay in the airport till flights open up, lacking USD. I’m paying 72 USD a night for a room at the musty Nihal here, which I was planning to save. Guess I can say I was in the Middle East now. It’s fucking hot.

Sarah isn’t an active blogger anymore, nor does she ever blog here. There were some relevant Google Ads on the Dubai Demographics post, but besides that I don’t know anything about jobs in Dubai, or Dubai for that matter.

i watched this Spanish guy berate his wife on the streets of Madrid and follow up his tirade with a few choice slaps. A strong feeling of outrage demanded that i should intervene, but i have to admit i was one of the crowd standing there and watching this all happen…what to do?

Live and let live man. All rights are a trade off (says me incitefully).

what to do? i dont know! something! isnt it a natural instinct to react when you see someone inflicting violence on someone else right under your nose? not that its always the convenient or even safe way out, not that it will for sure get you anywhere, but isnt it normal to get charged by a rush of adrenaline and want to do something? shout, or say something, or…SOMETHING? i dont know…i just cant imagine myself being able to watch some kid or a woman getting beaten up. maybe in that moment id wouldnt be in a position to do something, but i’d *want* to.

Ever seen the inside of a ME prison? If you’re any colour other than lilly-white, they throw the key away til your fine is paid (never mind if you have no one on the outside) or til your embassy shows up (if you’re Sri Lankan, don’t hold your breath on that one). And the inside of a prison is exactly what brown trash like us get if you touch an Arab — if you’re lucky.

I was once disembarking at Beirut, and was the only Sri Lankan male on the flight. All the others were housemaids. The border guards courteously led me to the head of the queue (probably coz I was wearing trainers), while they got the SL women in line by yelling in their faces in Arabic, or if that didn’t work, grabbing them by the hair and dragging them into place.

Who can blame the Israelis?

in principle it’s always a terrible thing for people to hit each other. in reality it’s one of those culturally-sensitive things; sarah’s comment makes me think maybe it’s just the acceptable punishment for naughty kids. (i still disagree with it, but i have to approach the subject differently when it’s not my culture and i open my big mouth.)

in america, i’ve frequently been party to men getting violent with women or people getting violent with kids in public. it’s particularly awful when you’re on the subway and there’s a whole car full of people watching. usually i or someone will intervene, just asking “is there some problem here?” or telling the aggressor to cool off. in the US it’s definitely not acceptable culturally, so just the threat of being-seen is a deterrent. i think you’re not really putting yourself at physical risk unless the aggressor is drunk or something. however you totally run the risk of getting yelled at by that person–or insulted.

i’ve had that happen and though (one time) it was scary it was also sort of affirming. then again, i worry that the victim is just going to get it worse later in private, and that they too are (obviously) embarrassed by the whole thing.

*sense of justice*: to be completely honest, I was the most pissed that they were blocking the escalator. I guess I should feel bad for that, but what am I going to do about some kid getting slapped? Adopt him?

but that must sound awful. I was sorry to see the kid getting hit and was never and would never hit a child. I just don’t think someone in an airport has any rights and responsibilities much beyond minding the escalator.

Sophist – Live and let live man … are you referring to the observer, son, father or mother? I guess somebody has to make that tradeoff less worthwhile eh!

Sara, Reb – what if that naughty kid happens to have autism, aspergers or something similar would this also be acceptable.

However, I have to agree that speaking up against such wrongs in another country/culture is much more uncomfortable not for Reb’s reasoning (I’m guessing “culturually sensitive” means respect for the cultural norms as opposed to the fear of them) but out of self-interest, also known as the “fear of getting my ass kicked”.

I agree with Ivap – of course i felt like i wanted to do something but a greater feeling was one of self-preservation – didnt really want to risk getting slapped myself..

There may be such a thing as an acceptable beating , or rather …an accepted beating. Have witnessed a few would-be thieves in Sri Lanka getting the shit kicked out of them and then handed over to the Police for more of the same. In no way am i saying this should happen – just that i can live with that much easier than with the idea of a woman getting slapped around in the street.

Ivap…touche!

The Japanese guy a couple of doors down from me ‘beat up his girlfriend’. I sleep like the proverbial baby and have made it through bomb blasts and earth tremors so there was no way I was going to wake up for some screeching woman and ambulances. Apparently bloody had been dripping from her nose and she was drenched in red, and he was covered in the same. These all second hand stories.

People have started shunning him, and he is visibly embarrassed since everybody on the corridor, and subsequently everybody in the hall knew about it.

In no way was what he did right….even if all he did was push her off and connected stronger than he expected to (it happens, I didn’t WANT to split open the Buckinghamshire fly half’s head but he had it coming). But she told the police she started it. Whether you want to believe that or not is upto you. But the fact that she said it means that her affection for this man, is stronger than her sense of indignation and fear. Is it within our rights to make him feel worse about what happened by ostracising him and advising her to leave what may well be a fulfilling relationship which we choose to benchmark on one incident?

Sometimes people are abusive. I got whacked as a kid and I’m no worse off for it. Several of my friends got whacked as kids too. I remember my glasses flying across the classroom in Year 9 because I was trying to get my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pencil case back from some thieving bastard, and the teacher took exception to it. I think they heard the slap in the floor below.

I didn’t complain, my parents didn’t complain, the other kids found it hilarious. I picked up my glasses and got on with it.

May as Reb says it’s the cultural lag. Maybe the more ‘advanced’ societies and more socially evolved among us frown on the practice. But chastisement is necessary. Some people only respond to certain things. In school, I found that you could reason with some troublemakers and you had to essentially beat the crap out of them. I’m no sociologist and don’t know why this is. But that’s the way it is.

Indi maybe the kid at the top of the Dubai escalator was a bastard beyond description. Parents too get frustrated. It is a human failing. There’s just so far some people can be pushed. It’s no excuse or justification for their reaction, but it should be a deterrant for us in passing judgement. Audi alteram partem.

Once again maybe it’s the cultural acceptance, but I would never attempt to get in the way of a parent disciplining their kids or a domestic argument even if it is in a public place. I draw the line of course when there is a potentiality of real physical harm being done. I don’t condone it, but I don’t condemn it as vigorously as to get involved without good cause.

Dunno…it’s complicated.

You should see how we do it Miami style, you should shoot him, drag his dead body to the front lawn, stick the water hose up his ass, and turn it on full. Hey, in Miami just like in Dubai….violence and stupidity are the norm!

Why Does India Suck At The Olympics?

Today on the morning show we talked about the Olympics, namely China’s emerging dominance. For me the bigger question is India. Why does India suck so much? In 2008 the US won 110 medals, China won 100 and India won… 3. India has over a billion people, some economic clout and is by all counts an emerging superpower, but they suck at the Olympics. Why?

New New Kottu

Janith has updated Kottu with rims and shit. Seriously, it looks pretty good. You could say the desktop look is cosmetic, but check out the mobile. Kottu now looks like an app with settings and menus and such. The biggest problem with K2 is me, ie, it now takes me up to a month to respond to emails. OMG I’m scared of my email. But Janith’s done this code and design update all by himself and it looks pretty good. Check it out. There was one bug with the previous page link. Lettuce know if there’s any more.

Miss Travel. Alternately, Mistravel

This is highly dubious. Miss Travel is a travel/social networking site that connects ‘Generous’ and ‘Attractive’ travelers. To, like, travel together, I guess. It all seems a bit like arranged prostitution and trafficking. This is part of a broader online trend to connect rich men to younger, attractive women. Sites like seekingarrangement.com connects women to ‘sugar daddies’ already. I guess Miss Travel is just taking that trend international. Wait, I checked, it’s the same guy doing both.

Buying Appliances Online (Singer)

Sri Lankan domestics never say anything, they just stop coming. My maid just stopped coming and when I finally pressed her she said I needed to get a washing machine. I was hoping to ride this one out, but I’ve run out of underwear and I have no choice. I finally caved and bought a washing machine, from Singer, ONLINE. I put the online in all caps because it’s pretty awesome. I ordered the thing in like 15 minutes on Saturday and they just delivered it today. It’s pretty awesome, this brave new world.
