Indi: Please Donate To Sarvodaya.org

This is a copy of an email I sent to my friends. I think you are my friends too.

To my friends, I love and miss you a lot. I know a lot of you are on Third World salaries like me, but if you can forward this to your family and friends I would appreciate it. I’ve asked people to wait before donating because I wanted to make sure that the money was helping the people in need. Now I feel that it is.

I am now asking you to donate to Sarvodaya.org. Sarvodaya is well known in Sri Lanka and abroad for its 50 years of work to alleviate poverty, promote peace, and relieve suffering. I trust Sarvodaya. My family trusts Sarvodaya.

I sleep in the Sarvodaya hostel. Yesterday I worked all night organizing online payments to Sarvodaya.org. When you donate I see the money come into our bank account. When the money is spent I see where it goes. In the last 12 hours we have collected over 50,000 USD. I see that it is saving lives.

That money buries the over 30,000 dead. It gives clean water, food, medicine, and shelter to the 1 million refugees. Sarvodaya has stations in 34 Sri Lankan cities, including the most heavily damaged. The distribution network is good, and most importantly the people are honest and kind.

I am asking you to donate money here because Sarvodaya will use the money wisely. I also ask because you can hold me personally accountable. I am working full-time so that you can see the results of your donations over the Net. My blog is updated as much as I can and we have a team rebuilding Sarvodaya.org for this crisis. I believe in Sarvodaya and I believe in Sri Lanka. I believe in your prayers and thoughts. I believe that money donated here will be well spent.

I also ask that you consider distributing your donations to other countries as well. I cannot vouch for any particular organizations, but we are all the same at times like these. Actually, I think that we are all in this life together, but we only see it now.

I wish I had something better to say but I am tired and crying. Thank you, and all my love,

indi

Great to see the fine work you are doing for Sarvodaya.

Since the day of this monumental disaster, we’ve been running a website with information on how people can assist the relief agencies, at http://www.aidsrilanka.com

We’ve also mentioned how you can get further information about the current situation.

It would be great if you can spread the word about aidsrilanka.com through the Sarvodaya website.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • Mahinda: This is sort of a forum, isn't it? What I mean is that Indi posts something, everyone has a quick read, then starts using this space to air their own views and spread their own message or start their own little (quite often completely unrelated) arguments or whatever... Its got an organic quality, which I think is quite nice......
  • The way of the Dodo: I think we should take some of this stuff and create a forum. That allows for better discussion and more mature dialog. What do you guys think...
  • Mahinda: Just curious... Didn't mean to offend....
Much More Mahinda:
  • Mahinda: Lousy, uninteresting comeback with only mild entertainment value. Where's the wit? Where's the logic/justification to the comment? I'm disappointed in you......
  • David Blacker: Mahinda, I doubt you'd make a good bench press, never mind a press sec....
  • Mahinda: Machang Blacker! Where have you been??! Were you busy washing your hair or something? Oh sorry - you don't have hair, no? So why the offensive attitude? Don't you think I'd make a good press sec? ;)...
The Final Cross:
  • Mahinda: Flyovers, if effectively used, are an excellent method of improving the flow of traffic and congestion. Since you guys don't think the ones that have been built work terribly well towards that objective, lets just blame Mahinda and the Government for this and move on :) Ok. That was just a little joke, but on a serious note, I think development should be well thought out and also implemented in the most cost effective manner. Which...
  • Anon: To add to what Dodo say, before the fly-over there was stop-go traffic at the Dehiwala junction. After the flyover there is a continuous, but slow flow of traffic. Although I use that road only rarely in my limited experience the length of the queue and the time taken to travel is no better after the flyover, and may be slightly worse. Moving the bus stand would be an improvement at Dehiwala, think Nugegoda is somewhat more...
  • Anon: Thanks Shammi, there was a very good interview in the Nation a few years back that opened my eyes to him. Think he did a fair job at the port and according to reports did not take a large "grant" that was in the offing. Agree with Dodo that Mangala's chances of getting elected at the moment look pretty slip....

Donating To IDPs Right Now

There are a lot of Sri Lankans suffering in the North. As I noted in the last Leader column, there are something like 500,000 displaced over the course of this war which is about equal to the 500,000 displaced by the tsunami. In the most recent fighting there is especially acute suffering. I do believe we need to mount a commensurate response. There are a lot of moves afoot to do stuff locally, but if

What Is Happening In Sri Lanka?

Diyath Ariyaratne and Virtusa pulled through and wrote the .jsp files we needed to plug into the Sampath Bank Gateway. That took up all day. We need PayPal here! But who cares. The real story is in the East and South where the bodies are piled. But I have Internet in Colombo. I had a meal today and I could sleep. Hence you're hearing from me. I'm trying

What’s Happening In The North

Note that this is all hearsay. I can't source any of this officially, so call your own sources. This year, about 40,000 people have crossed over into IDP camps. There's been heavy rain from 8-11 March, so living conditions extra suck. The GoSL has transported food and stuff using the A9 and by sea. Note that food and goods often come from some other agency and are distributed by the GoSL. India is making significant

Things Are Not OK

Again, I reiterate that Colombo is fine. I'm fine and my family is fine and if you're wondering about someone in Colombo they're probably fine. That said, Sri Lanka is not fine. There are over 15,000 people dead and millions displaced. The main concern is that the saltwater, sewage, and rotting bodies have made the water undrinkable. There are not enough shovels or cloth to bury the dead and there

When The Levee Breaks

My prayers go to the people affected by Hurricane Katrina. I can't believe that the city of New Orleans is, well, gone. During the tsunami American people gave so much support to Sri Lanka and it made all the difference. I remember when things were really FUBAR here and Americans wouldn't stop emailing or donating. The fact that normal people on the other side of the world cared so much really
