Today was, I think, my final Photoshop class at the NIBM. The class is good at Photoshop, they can extract images and use layers pretty well. Today I had them do what I do, which is think of an idea and make an image to match. First they went to www.wikipedia.org to find an article that interested them. These guys, Ranga and Yatila, picked (as always) Bollywood stars, specifically Aishwarya Rai. This is the Wikipedia article:
Aishwarya Rai (born November 1, 1973) is a Bollywood actress and model. She won the Miss World competition in 1994, after being the first runner-up in the Miss India contest.
Aishwarya was born in Mangalore, Karnataka, India to Krishnaraj Rai, a Merchant Navy Officer and Brinda Rai. She studied in DG Ruparel College and Arya Vidya in Mumbai where she was brought up. Her first modelling assignment was for Camelin Industries when she was in her ninth grade. She appeared in many advertisements following that. Aishwarya’s popularity rose after winning her Miss World crown in 1994. She was sought after for endorsements and offers to act in films.
She has had a tumultuous relationship with Salman Khan who used to allegedly beat her up. Ever since Rai broke off the relationship, Khan has had trouble letting go and has threatened Rai’s current boyfriend Vivek Oberoi on many occasions.
Her films are mostly in the Hindi language, although she made a recent critically acclaimed Bengali film based on a Rabindranath Tagore book named Choker Bali. She will star in a commercial UK/Hollywood production called Bride and Prejudice (2004) directed by Gurinder Chadha. She is the highest paid Bollywood actress. She is the only Indian to have served on the jury of the Cannes Film Festival.
The assignment was to pick 3 ideas from an article and make an image that communicated them. So, they chose Aishwarya, and Salman Khan. They extracted a third image, Aishwariya again, and faded her onto Salman’s chest so that she was like tatooed on his chest. I told them to add her black eyes, which is horribly insensitive and wrong – but it is the most interesting thing in the text. Ranga and Yatila complained that they couldn’t ruin someone so ‘pretty’, but I told them they’d fail if they didn’t. I never liked Salman Khan. He has a George Bush sneer.
I hope that in the future if they have an idea they’ll be confident enough to draw on the resources of Photoshop and the Net to express it visually.
