The Axis of Evil

Cuba Cuba Libya Libya Syria Syria Iraq Iraq Iran Iran North Korea North Korea

I think Cuba and Libya don’t really need to be here. The source of this map is the BBC, who cites George W. Bush and US Undersecretary John Bolton. Bolton is a little crazy, and he added Libya and Cuba, and Syria.. but Syria should be on the list. So should Saudi Arabia, but we couldn’t say that.

I think that one of the promises of Iraq is that in 5 years the US won’t have to depend as much on Saudi Arabia for Oil. The Iraqi people will get paid under a Democratic government too. It’s good for everybody.

The English Speaking Elite:
  • shammi: Oh? But there was never any need for you to guess was there? Besides, I've already mentioned my kids on this blog a couple of times. Sorry you weren't tuned in....
  • Mahinda: :) Oh you're already a mommy, eh? Would never have guessed!...
  • shammi: And then there was this awful, evil wizard ...... Don't mind him Dodo, He's just jealous 'cos he could never think up such a sweet gesture. You may send me any number of cute trollcats. And Mahinda, I'm already telling my kids a different story....
The Final Cross:
  • shammi: They must have abandoned the original plan for fear of not being able to muster enough support. Most people wouldn't fancy a beating up by the riot police and a night out in the cooler. So it was just a protest by a few opposition UNP MPs dressed in black, sitting outside the parliament somewhere. The few who are left, that is. Tragic!...
  • The way of the Dodo: No I live in Sri Lanka. I just haven't heard of the black day rally outside of the black july one...
  • shammi: Oh! you're probably not based here. The forces opposing the amendment had planned to call a general strike and urged people to dress in black on 8th Sep. as a sign of protest. Not sure whether it's still on, 'cos there's talk of a fast unto death by someone near the parliament today, : ) Yeah, another one of those!...
Much More Mahinda:
  • The way of the Dodo: really!...
  • Colombian: Anyone else is going to the 'Black day' rally?? I was promised a pack of chicken fried rice and a bottle of old arrack....
  • Mahinda: Is that what's happening, rookie? Ok then. Hey listen, if you want to improve on that big L on your forehead, I know this really good tattoo guy that does good work. I'm not sure he's ever done a forehead before, but I'll ask him for you. Now enough of the banter. While I'm enjoying it, I can't imagine too many of the other people visiting this blog will appreciate our little exchanges so much. So...

A Tamil Aside

Speaking more French than Sinhala, I have no particular interest in this Sinhala Buddhist thing. I am Buddhist (try to be practicing), but I've never found a country more difficult to meditate in. I honestly don't identify with the Sinhala as much as 'Sri Lankan'. There is still a rarefied cosmopolitan existence if you can eke it out, in certain houses now, cause reality is creeping into the bars. That's why it's strange upon meeting

DLSRs Vs Compact Cameras, and EVIL

I use a compact camera, a Canon S90. I have always used pocket-sized cams. Professional photographers generally use DSLRs, or digital single lens reflexes. These are big cameras with big sensors that take great photos, fast. They are, however, big and heavy and require a man-bag if not a duffel. Their size forces you to be a 'professional photographer' all the time rather than someone who just happens to take pictures.

Chennai Wait Listing

I'm in Chennai, which feels like Pettah, but somehow everything feels like Pettah. It's a big town, big highways, big buildings, imposing offices. Walking around, it also smells a bit like pee. Around the train station at least. I really regret wearing shoes, and packing my things in a handbag. Now I'm walking around this strange town with duty free bags, wearing white trainers. And nobody speaks English.

The J Curve

The recent LTTE attack on Galle was a little push, a little dare. They are daring Sri Lanka to close up and crack down, but the country has so far controlled its temper. The reports are that only two people were killed (condolences to their families), but the impact was much higher. The LTTE is a small terrorist group of about 10,000 cadres funded mostly by drug trafficking and smuggling (Cost of Conflict). They recruit

Chamundi Swami

There's this giant bull statue at the top of Chamundi Hill, Mysore. We took the motorbike up there, but not for the bull, but to crawl into the cave and chat with the Swami. He was a journalist before he renounced the world and went wandering in the Himalayas, for seven years I think. Then he'd come and taken care of this temple, most of the time in this cave, I guess.
